Office equipment is sold on headline numbers that almost nobody can use. A printer quoted at 40 pages a minute is quoting a single sided black page from a warm machine, and the cost that matters is pence per page over five years rather than the price on the box. Every listing here states the real running cost, the monthly duty cycle the machine is actually built for, what the consumables cost and how long they last. Where a cheaper machine would do the job we say so, because the money in this trade is in the consumables and we would rather you knew that from us than worked it out in year two.

Specification

• Use: destroying documents to a stated security level. The level is the specification, not the marketing
• Specification: a heavier duty build with a higher monthly duty cycle and a longer service life, for a machine that works all day rather than occasionally
• Capacity: sheet capacity per pass and bin volume both stated. A shredder bought on sheet capacity alone will be emptied three times a day
• Consumables: cutter oil, which is not optional. An unoiled cross cut shredder jams and then burns out its motor, and it is the commonest reason one is replaced
• Connectivity: not applicable
• Running cost: oil and sacks. The duty rating is stated in minutes of continuous running followed by cool down, and a machine run past it repeatedly will fail
• Sustainability: shredded paper is recyclable and the sacks here are. We state the actual certification rather than the word sustainable. For paper that means FSC or PEFC with the chain of custody number on the wrapper. For recycled content it means the percentage. Anything described only as eco friendly is described that way because there is nothing to certify.

• Warranty: two years on the machine and a lifetime guarantee on the cutting cylinders
• DIN 66399: the security level on this page is the tested standard with the certificate in the box, not a description

• Oil it: the single thing that decides how long a shredder lasts

Nothing to set up. Oil it on the schedule on the card, which is more often than anybody does and is the difference between five years and eighteen months.

Which one to buy

The security level is a specification rather than a preference. DIN 66399 runs from P1 to P7 and the level you need depends on what the paper contains: P4 for ordinary personal data, P5 for anything sensitive, P7 where the standard is mandated. Above that, buy on duty rating and bin size, because those are what decide whether the shredder gets used or ignored.
