the everyday paper, FSC certified with the chain of custody number printed on the wrapper rather than a leaf logo and a hope

Office equipment is sold on headline numbers that almost nobody can use. A printer quoted at 40 pages a minute is quoting a single sided black page from a warm machine, and the cost that matters is pence per page over five years rather than the price on the box. Every listing here states the real running cost, the monthly duty cycle the machine is actually built for, what the consumables cost and how long they last. Where a cheaper machine would do the job we say so, because the money in this trade is in the consumables and we would rather you knew that from us than worked it out in year two.

Specification

  • Use: everyday printing, copying and correspondence
  • Specification: the everyday specification, which covers most offices and is what we would put on a quote unless you told us otherwise
  • Capacity: reams per box in the title, and a pallet option on the quantity selector for an office that gets through it
  • Consumables: this is the consumable
  • Connectivity: not applicable
  • Running cost: priced per ream and per pallet, and the pallet price is published rather than quoted, because a published price file is what a buyer actually wants
  • Sustainability: FSC or PEFC certified with the chain of custody number printed on the wrapper, and the recycled lines state the post consumer percentage. We state the actual certification rather than the word sustainable. For paper that means FSC or PEFC with the chain of custody number on the wrapper. For recycled content it means the percentage. Anything described only as eco friendly is described that way because there is nothing to certify.
  • Delivery: next working day on boxes, pallet delivery booked to a slot with a tail lift
  • Weight: approximately 12.50 kilograms
  • Warranty: a jam free guarantee: if a ream jams repeatedly in a machine that is otherwise working, we replace the box and collect the rest
  • Chain of custody: the FSC or PEFC number is printed on the wrapper, which is how you know the certification is real
  • Damp: store it wrapped and off the floor. Most mystery printer jams are damp paper
  • Trade: Trade account customers get thirty day terms on approval, a published price file, next day delivery on stocked lines and a named account manager rather than a queue. Ask for it, because we do not upsell it.

What arrives

  • the reams or sheets as described
  • the FSC or PEFC chain of custody number on the wrapper
  • a reorder card
  • pallet delivery where the quantity requires it

Setting it up

Store it flat, wrapped, and off a cold floor. Paper that has absorbed damp curls in a duplex unit and gets blamed on the printer, and it is the commonest cause of a machine that has suddenly started jamming.

Which one to buy

Weight and whiteness are the two specifications and only one of them matters. 80gsm is right for everyday work and 100gsm for letters that leave the building. Whiteness is almost entirely marketing, and a higher CIE number usually means more optical brightener rather than better paper. Recycled at 80gsm now runs as well as virgin in any modern duplex unit, which was not true ten years ago and is why people still avoid it.
